Human. Nature. (2022)

A collaborative audiovisual project — motion photography paired with live healing chants and the resonance of singing bowls.

Is it human nature to consume? Or to be consumed?

Human. Nature. was made in the wake of the pandemic, out of a grief that felt less like loss than a collective mourning of our former lives. We came to it through a Buddhist understanding of shedding — the practice of letting go, again and again, of who we had been, so that something else might emerge.

The work is an audiovisual series weaving motion photography with sound. Visual and sonic gestures move together in time, exploring how we approach the natural world, depict it, and are altered by it. Mobile cameras have made all of us potential witnesses to nature's ephemeral beauty, raising the question of what that witnessing demands of us in return.

Human. Nature. proposes that rebirth begins in the act of attending. To truly see the natural world is to be changed by it — and to begin again.
