Mu Lan (2022 - present)

Mu Lan (木兰) offers four portraits of a single subject — the calla lily — rendered through infrared wavelengths that reveal what the eye alone cannot hold. Against a ground of pure black, each flower turns luminous and exposed: its form familiar, its light wholly transformed.

The series began with one image and stayed there for four years, returning each spring as the flower returned, until the work found its full shape. The calla lily is a flower of annual faithfulness — it comes back, quietly and without announcement, and that return became the subject as much as the bloom itself.

Mu Lan is dedicated to the artist's mother, who goes for a mammogram every year. The work was made in response to One in Eight, an open call issued by Fotografiska Emerging and The Estée Lauder Companies' Breast Cancer Campaign.
